ANTICIPATING THE TIP:
When the other team gets a tight set, anticipate the tip. Why? At this level, the majority of players reserve the tip for a set they don't like or they don't feel they can get their feet to. The tip then becomes more of a save than a deceptive play. So when you're playing and your opponent gets a tight set - anticipate the tip, watch the player's hitting arm and body language, then get a good jump on it.
HOW SHOULD YOU HANDLE TIGHT SETS?
When you get a tight set, get your feet there and hit it! OR tool/swipe. A lot of girls think they can't get their feet there so they give up on it too early. Instead, get on the horse, believe in your speed, get up fast and take a rip. Just make sure you have the body control to stay on your side and not net. If you can't do this safely - don't do it.
A TIP ON OFF-SPEED SHOTS:
Here's a tip...the tips and roll shots that usually land for a kill are the ones you perform on the GOOD SETS. Don't become too "tippy", but once or twice per match you should go up strong on a NICE SET and wind up like your going to hit the ball hard (get your hitting elbow back...don't come in with the statue-of-liberty-arm or you'll give it away). Then at the last second pull up for a tip or roll shot. Where you put it depends on their defense, but usually the middle of the court (over the middle blocker) is a good spot.
Get comfortable with your off-speed shots in practice so when game-time comes, you have another shot in your arsenal of hits.
